How and why should we make seed treatment?

Modern seed treatment products help to accelerate emergence, improve plant growth and nutritional efficiency.

Pests and weather conditions affect seeds with low nutrient reserves. In this case, seed treatment increases the chances of high yields. This explains the popularity of seed treatment products among farmers and the demand for already treated seed.

What is seed treatment?

The time between planting and emergence is the most delicate stage of plant growth and development. In soil, seeds become sensitive to insects, pests, bacterial and fungal pathogens. Seed treatment can be used to soften the seed coat. It helps germination and initial nutrition, which provides critical plant life processes that form their immunity. Seed treatments can also be used to inoculate the soil around the seeds with beneficial microorganisms that will provide long-term protection against pathogens. Special treatment of planting material, known as seed treatment, will help make it more resistant to environment conditions.

Seed treatment can be made in two ways: 

1) by the seed producer, as seeds fertilizer;

2) by the farmer to ensure fast and efficient germination and further growth and development of plants.

Seed treatment with micronutrients along with foliar feeding achieve a great popularity and is used as the first and most important technological step in crop nutrition. Pre-sowing seed treatment can increase germination energy by 5-6% and improve seed germination by 8-10%.

That is why we at Wonder have created a high-quality fertilizer Wonder Leaf Wonder Micro, which we recommend using for foliar nutrition and seed treatment.

In order to help the plant in its initial stages of growth and development, the fertilizer contains the following elements:

4% nitrogen, 4% manganese, 10% sulfur, 0.5% boron, 0.5% copper and 0.5% zinc, as well as iron and manganese in the amount of 0.6% and 0.9%. The complex fertilizer contains amino and organic acids, as well as phytohormones that regulate plant growth and development.

Phytohormones are chemicals that regulate plant growth and development. They are formed mainly in actively growing tissues at the tops of roots and stems. Phytohormones usually include auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins.

Auxins, also called “growth hormones,” play an important role in plant life, affecting metabolic processes that form the basis of plant growth and development.

Gibberellins are a class of substances similar to organic acids. They are plant hormones (phytohormones). Gibberellins stimulate plant growth and development and promote seed germination. Cytokinins stimulate cell division and differentiation.

Trace elements are extremely important for plants:

Zinc stimulates root system development. Boron stimulates the formation of growth points. Copper and Manganese activate and catalyze enzymatic reactions, because enzymes play an extremely important role in all vital processes, directing and regulating the body’s metabolism.

Research on germination energy and field germination.

At Wonder, we regularly conduct research to improve our fertilizers and find the most effective options for growing huge harvests. So let’s take a look at one of our experiments, assuming the following well-known facts:

The number of seeds that germinated in the first 3-4 days shows the germination energy in percentage. Seeds with high germination energy make better use of growth factors, there are less amount of weeds, and are more resistant to external adverse conditions. Statistically, varietal germination of sorts is 60-86%, and germination of hybrids is 95-98%.

For testing the Wonder Leaf Wonder Micro product, we used winter wheat seed «Felix».

The crop seeds are sown according to the scheme of multiple repetitions, which is given below:

Wonder Leaf Wonder Micro has a higher germination rate of 530 thousand plants/ha.

Therefore, 530 thousand plants/ha*30 (seeds in the ear) = 15.9 million seeds/1000 = 15900*45 (M1000) = 636000 grams, or 636 kg/ha.

Taking into account grain prices:

1000 kg – $216.6 (the average cost of 1 ton of seeds) 636 kg – $137.8.

When calculating the cost part using the treatment of 1.5 liters of Wonder Leaf Wonder Micro per ton of seeds. The seeding rate was 220 kg per ha, formally 0.33 liters were used, which is $ 1.15. The price of 1 liter of Wonder Leaf Wonder Micro is $3.57 (the price is as of 22.07.2022, from the exclusive distributor in Ukraine, Makosh).

So, taking into account the conducted research, the fertilizer Wonder Leaf Wonder Micro with the norm of 1.5 l/t of seeds shows good results and has an effective impact on increasing your yield with an economically beneficial effect.

It should be noted that not every farmer can buy quality seeds from the manufacturer or uses their own seeds from the previous harvest (which lose their germination capacity). That is why it is necessary to test seed material in the laboratory for germination, to take into account seedlings variegation. In this way you can see how plants will appear on the soil surface. If the indicator is low and there is variegation, treating seeds with fertilizers is needed that will help to improve these indicators.
